Program Notes
Today’s performance of The Hobbit marks a special moment not only for Tulsa Opera, but for the remarkable young artists of Tulsa Youth Opera. Programs like this are rare: few opera companies in the United States maintain a dedicated training program for young singers that culminates in fully staged productions. Tulsa Youth Opera first presented The Hobbit in 2016, and we are thrilled to bring it back nearly a decade later. Dean Burry’s enchanting adaptation remains a perfect showcase for young voices – rich with opportunities for musical, theatrical, and imaginative growth. It continues to capture the spirit of adventure and discovery that defines both the story and the young artists who bring it to life.
J.R.R. Tolkien and Dean Burry’s The Hobbit is a natural fit for young singers. Bilbo’s journey from the comfort of home to the perils of the wider world mirrors the excitement and challenges of growing up. The story demands not only vocal skill but emotional imagination, asking these young artists to become brave adventurers, wise wizards, greedy goblins, and elegant elves. In their hands, Tolkien’s world is alive with humor, wonder, and heart – a perfect match for the spirit and creativity of youth.
Musically, Burry’s score is full of invention. Each group of characters – Elf-maidens, Hobbits, Dwarves, Elves, Goblins – has its own distinctive musical style, allowing young singers to explore different colors and moods. The opera draws from a rich tapestry of styles, blending lyrical melodies, rhythmic mischief, and folk-inspired choruses into a soundscape that is both accessible and sophisticated. It is a vivid, tuneful, and carefully crafted work that showcases not only the vocal talents of young singers, but their ability to inhabit a story with depth and authenticity.
We are proud to share this adventure with you.

Synopsis
At the Council of Elrond in Rivendell, the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is invited to tell the story of how he came to find the One Ring. With the help of Elvish performers, he brings his adventures to life.
Bilbo’s tale begins in the peaceful hills of Hobbiton in the Shire, where life is quiet and uneventful—just the way he likes it. But everything changes when Gandalf the Wizard and 13 Dwarves arrive at his door. Led by the proud Thorin Oakenshield, the Dwarves are determined to reclaim their stolen treasure from the fearsome Dragon Smaug. Despite his doubts, Bilbo agrees to join their quest.
Their journey is full of dangers. Trolls nearly capture them, Goblins chase them through dark tunnels, and giant spiders lurk in the forest of Mirkwood. Bilbo, once timid and unsure, begins to show courage. He outwits Gollum in a game of riddles, rescues the Dwarves from trouble, and discovers a magic Ring that can make him invisible.
At last, the company reaches the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo sneaks into Smaug’s lair, stealing a golden cup and finding the Dragon’s one weak spot. When Smaug attacks Lake-town in fury, it is Bard the Bowman who brings the Dragon down.
With Smaug’s treasure unguarded, old rivalries flare up among Men, Elves, and Dwarves. Bilbo, who only wants peace, offers a priceless jewel toend the fighting. Before they can reach a truce, Goblins and Wolves descend, and a great battle begins. Thorin fights bravely but is fatally wounded; in his final moments, he makes peace with Bilbo.
The adventure over, Bilbo declines riches and returns to the Shire, forever changed by the journey that took him there and back again.
