Artist Spotlight: Lucia Lucas

Lucia Lucas was born in Sacramento, California and has lived and worked in Germany for the past 10 years. Described as “absolutely impressive, arguably one of the most powerful and beautiful baritone voices you could hear” (TheSideBalcony), Lucia has performed at opera houses all over the world and has been a permanent member of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe in Germany.

In May 2019, Lucia makes her mainstage US debut in the title role of Don Giovanni for Tulsa Opera’s 71st season, titled “An Era of Inclusion.” This appearance marks the first time a trans woman has performed a principal role on the operatic stage in the US. On her website, Lucia remarks that she “is adept at playing men and is always happy to play a man onstage (so long as she doesn’t have to play one in real life).”

In an interview with NBC News, Lucia shared her excitement about her US and Tulsa Opera debut: “I left my home country to perfect my craft, and I can’t wait to come home to share it with Tulsa,” she said. “In addition to simply my debut, I can’t wait to show off what I have learned over the 10 years since I left to pursue my career.”
