Feeding the Food Insecure
When volunteers join local charities like the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, it saves them time and money that can be used to feed our community. So we joined them recently in bagging up groceries, answering the phones, and other simple tasks to help them out.
“It is about 30 million pounds of food a year we have coming through these doors. I love for people to be taken care of as far as food goes but to know they are being cared for. A box of food isn’t going to change a life today, but it does make sure people know we care about them. They are loved,” said Dwayne Sheridan, of the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.
Offering Hope to Our Community
“I know the power of community,” said Dani Keil, Director of Outreach for Tulsa Opera.
Sharing beautiful music is the soul of Tulsa Opera, and community is our beating heart. From the beginning of the pandemic, we’ve looked for ways to share music with people and bring hope and happiness to Tulsa wherever we are able.
“During the pandemic when the company really saw a need–we could take our music out into the community when we were shut down during the pandemic and couldn’t do our large-scale productions,” said Keil.
Feeding Hungry Bellies – Filling Hungry Souls
The need for food is rising in Tulsa and with it the need for something to inspire the weary. We see that need and are reaching out in fresh new ways.
In 2020, we performed Rigoletto at ONEOK Field, the first live opera performance since the pandemic began. Then, we gave scores of artists the opportunity to share their music with our audience from the safety of their own homes with our Staying Alive series.
For us, it only makes sense that we would take time to care for those who struggle with food insecurity by volunteering at the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.
