When people think of opera, they often imagine grand solo performances by leading sopranos and tenors. But true opera lovers know that some of the most stirring, emotional moments on stage are created by the chorus—a collective of voices that breathe life into every scene. The Tulsa Opera Chorus, made up of dedicated singers from our local community, has long been a cornerstone of Tulsa Opera’s productions, elevating every performance with their talent, commitment, and passion.

From its earliest days, the Tulsa Opera Chorus has been a group defined not just by vocal talent, but by the spirit of service and camaraderie that runs through its ranks. These singers, who work tirelessly for weeks or even months before opening night, contribute immeasurably to the opera’s power and impact. Their performances have been lauded as some of the finest in the country, and their dedication is a testament to the support Tulsa Opera enjoys from our vibrant community.

Over the years, the chorus has been part of many memorable productions. Critics have praised them as “the best rehearsed and the best performing ensemble singing we have ever seen” (Bill Donaldson, The Tulsa Tribune, 1966 Turandot) and “one of the finest opera choruses in the country” (Maurice de Vinna, Tulsa World, 1973 Il Trovatore). The 1983 production of Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman saw the chorus deliver a stunning performance that “came close to stealing the show” with their convincing sounds and exhilarating action, enveloping the audience in a ghostly, supernatural atmosphere. The chorus’s impact extends beyond music; they are often described as the glue that holds the entire production together, creating a sense of community that elevates every performance.

One of the most monumental moments in Tulsa Opera Chorus history was the 1977 production of Aïda, the first opera to be performed in the newly opened Chapman Music Hall at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. With its immense cast and grand staging, Aïda demanded everything the chorus had to give—and they delivered, filling the new space with a sound and energy that set the tone for all future performances at the venue.

After a year away, the Tulsa Opera Chorus is set to make their much-anticipated return to the stage in our season opener, Grand Voices: The Tulsa Opera Chorus in Concert. This powerful concert will showcase their artistry and celebrate their irreplaceable role within Tulsa Opera. It’s not just a performance; it’s a homecoming, a triumphant return that marks the start of another thrilling season.
