Three performances will be held at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center’s Liddy Doenges Theater on Saturday, January 6th at 2:30pm and 7:30pm and Sunday, January 7th at 2:30pm
Tulsa Youth Opera will present its annual production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s timeless opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors, in the Liddy Doenges Theater at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center the first weekend of January 2024.
The opera tells the story of a young boy named Amahl who lives in poverty with his mother. One night, their home is visited by the Three Kings, who are seeking shelter on their way to Bethlehem. This classic Epiphany story of charity and miracles perfectly captures the holiday spirit of joy and giving.
For many years, Tulsa Youth Opera has performed Amahl and the Night Visitors for the Tulsa community during the Christmas season. In 2022, after the 2021 COVID-era virtual performance, the group returned to a fully staged, in-person production, presenting to full audiences at the retirement community Trinity Woods. In 2023, the company moved to the Tulsa Performing Arts Center for three sold-out performances.
This year’s cast consists of more than thirty students in grades 3-12 from multiple Tulsa-area schools and features Tulsa Opera Filstrup Resident Artist Paige Dickey as Mother and Alumnus Steven Osborn as King Balthazar. The 50-minute opera will be sung in English with piano accompaniment by Principal Outreach Pianist, Kisun Drosdoff. Artistic Director Aaron Beck conducts, and Chief Operating Officer Dani Keil directs this year’s production at the Liddy Doenges Theatre at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.
“We’re celebrating our 75th anniversary at Tulsa Opera this season, and much like our company, Amahl and the Night Visitors remains popular nearly seventy-five years after its premiere,” said Beck. “Those who have never seen the opera will soon understand its staying power, just like those who return every holiday season. Amahl and the Night Visitors is an experience for all who wish the joy of Christmas would extend to the new year.”
Performances will be held at the Tulsa PAC’s Liddy Doenges Theater on January 6th at 2:30pm and 7:30pm and January 7th at 2:30pm. Tickets are $15 and are available for purchase online at tulsaopera.com/amahl or by contacting the Tulsa Opera Box Office at 918-582-3133.
