Tulsa Opera’s Board of Directors is thrilled to announce that Lori Decter Wright has been appointed as the company’s next General Director and CEO. Her tenure begins on November 6, 2023.

With more than 15 years of experience in the opera field, nationally and internationally, followed by 15 years in executive nonprofit business leadership in Tulsa, Lori Decter Wright’s career includes serving as a Principal Resident Artist with Opera San Jose from 2001 to 2006 followed by Director of Education and Membership for Sweet Adelines International from 2008 to 2014. For the last eight years, she has led Kendall Whittier, Inc. as Executive Director and is entering her sixth year as the District 7 City Councilor for the City of Tulsa.

In her new position, she will work in partnership with Artistic Director Aaron Beck to realize the company’s mission to produce professional opera of artistic integrity, enriching communities throughout the region by offering meaningful vocal music performances, inclusive educational opportunities, and innovative experiences to engage and inspire diverse audiences.

In a statement, Steve Walton, President of the Tulsa Opera Board of Directors, said, “In addition to her proven leadership ability, Lori Decter Wright has demonstrated a passion and commitment to the city of Tulsa for over a decade. Lori is exactly what our company needs to help guide us into our next 75 years.”

Aaron Beck, who will continue in his second season as the company’s Artistic Director, said, “When I agreed to step in as General Director on an interim basis a few months ago, it was my hope that the company would find a leader like Lori Decter Wright. I can’t wait to get back to full-time work focusing on the artistic needs of the company and creating magic in partnership with Lori.”

Ms. Decter Wright added, “I am beyond excited to have been invited to lead Tulsa Opera as the company celebrates 75 years of inspiring Tulsans, and the world, with its moving productions, compelling commissions, and unique offerings. Tulsa Opera is the 12th oldest opera company in the United States, a rare jewel in the crown of arts organizations, which I have long admired first as an artist, then as a patron and a volunteer, and now, as a member of the staff. I look forward to collaborating with Maestro Beck, the Board of Directors, professional staff, talented artists, amazing creatives, dedicated donors, enthusiastic audiences, and engaged community members in realizing an even brighter future for this dynamic and distinguished organization.”

Tulsa Opera celebrates 75 years with its sold-out season opener, The Medium by Gian Carlo Menotti, this Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 21 at Studio 308 located at 308 S. Lansing in Tulsa.
