On Friday, October 15 at ONEOK Field, Tulsa Opera takes its second at-bat with the delightful duplicity of Gianni Schicchi, Puccini’s brief, beloved comedy. But first up, it’s Puccini vs. Verdi — their most thrilling arias at ONEOK Field.
With world-class opera stars, hot dogs, beer, and dazzling fireworks, this night will go down in history as one to remember!
Meet two of the artists bringing this special production to life:
Jonathan Johnson as Rinuccio
Rising young tenor Jonathan Johnson’s many recent engagements have included Anthony Hope in Sweeney Todd at Opera Omaha, The Prince in The Love of Three Oranges with Opera Philadelphia, where he was named as one of their Emerging Artists, Jonathan Dale in Silent Night with Utah Opera, and Beppe in I Pagliacci with Opera Colorado.
He has also appeared with the Detroit Symphony in Messiah and with Cincinnati Symphony for Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri. Hailing from Macon, Georgia, Johnson is a graduate of the Patrick G. & Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Below is a clip of Johnson performing Messiah (Part I) by Handel with the Hallalujah Chorus.
Johnson will be performing in Puccini & Verdi Play Ball in just one short week!
Julius Ahn as Gherardo
Having starred in previous productions with Tulsa Opera, including Turandot in 2018 and Madama Butterfly in 2020, the award-winning, internationally acclaimed tenor will return to Tulsa to play the role of Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi.
Ahn’s portrayals and performances have been widely praised in such publications as Broadway World, Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, Opera News, San Francisco Chronicle, and many more.
Be there to see Ahn return to the Tulsa stage in Puccini & Verdi Play Ball on October 15!
