Tobias Picker and Gene Scheer share the behind-the-scenes stories of their productions along with video highlights. Picker and Scheer have collaborated on two operas: An American Tragedy (Metropolitan Opera – 2005) and Thérèse Raquin (Dallas Opera – 2001).
Tobias Picker:
Renowned composer Tobias Picker is Artistic Director of Tulsa Opera. His opera Fantastic Mr. Fox won the 2020 Grammy for Best Opera Recording.
Gene Scheer:
American songwriter and librettist Gene Scheer’s work has been produced in the world’s premiere opera houses, and he has composed songs for distinguished singers such as Renée Fleming and Nathan Gunn.
Scheer’s “American Anthem,” sung by Nora Jones, was prominently featured in Ken Burns’ Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary, “The War.” Mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves later performed it at the Capitol Rotunda Memorial Service for Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Most recently, “American Anthem” was quoted by President Joe Biden during his inaugural address.
