Staying Alive

This week’s Staying Alive video features mezzo-soprano Renée Rapier singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from Carousel by Rodgers & Hammerstein. She is accompanied by Lyndon Meyer.

A Grammy Award-winning singer, Renée Rapier has been described as a “dark, velvety mezzo” by Opera News. Tulsa audiences were fortunate enough to hear her earlier this year when she sang the role of Suzuki in Tulsa Opera’s production of Madama Butterfly.

Rapier is a longtime collaborator of composer and Tulsa Opera Artistic Director Tobias Picker. She appeared as the fifth maid in the world premiere of Picker’s opera Dolores Claiborne with San Francisco Opera. Subsequently, she sang starring roles in Fantastic Mr. Fox with Opera San Antonio and Emmeline with Opera Theatre St. Louis.

“You’ll Never Walk Alone” is from the second act of the Broadway musical Carousel, and is sung by Nettie Fowler as way of comforting Julie Jordan when her husband is killed during a failed robbery.
