Today’s Staying Alive video features soprano Laura McHugh singing Adelaide’s Aria from The Enchanted Pig by Jonathan Dove. She is accompanied by Lyndon Meyer.
McHugh was a Filstrup Resident Artist during Tulsa Opera’s 2019-20 season. She would have made both her company and role debut as Hannah Mosher in Tobias Picker’s Emmeline, but the production was rescheduled to 2021 due to the pandemic.
The Enchanted Pig, which originally premiered in 2006, is a chamber opera based on several different fairy tales. In this aria, Adelaide – whose mother, a witch, has arranged her marriage to the titular pig – has grown ever more demanding and impatient in the face of her upcoming wedding and takes it out on her servants.
