This week’s Staying Alive video features tenor John Irvin singing “If I Loved You” from Carousel by Rodgers & Hammerstein. He is accompanied by Lyndon Meyer.
John Irvin has been described as an “intrinsically beautiful lyric tenor” by Opera News, and has performed with a variety of companies, including L’Opera de Nice, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Los Angeles Philharmonic. Irvin sang the role of Matthew in Opera Theatre St. Louis’ celebrated 2015 production of Tobias Picker’s Emmeline.
“If I Loved You” is one of the most popular songs from Carousel and comes early in the first act, after Billy and Julie have lost their jobs because of their attraction to each other. They sing about what life might be like if they were in love, but they’re both reluctant to admit their feelings aloud.
