Staying Alive

Today’s Staying Alive video features baritone Weston Hurt singing “Te Deum” from Tosca by Giacomo Puccini. He is accompanied by Lyndon Meyer.

Weston Hurt made his Tulsa Opera debut in 2017, when he sang the role of Baron Scarpia in the Opera’s production of Tosca.

“Te Deum” is Scarpia’s aria that closes out the first act of the opera. In it, Scarpia gloats about his plan to have the painter Cavaradossi executed, and possess Cavaradossi’s lover, the singer Tosca, for himself. At the end of the aria, a procession enters the church singing a hymn, and Scarpia joins in with them after exclaiming that Tosca makes him forget even God.
