Staying Alive

Today’s Staying Alive video is the first of three special virtual performances in celebration of Pride Month. This video features Filstrup Outreach Artist and tenor Sam Briggs singing “Something’s Coming” from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein. He is accompanied by Lyndon Meyer on the piano.

Last season, Sam Briggs presented educational outreach performances throughout Oklahoma as a part of Tulsa Opera’s Opera on Tour! program. This May, he would have played the role of Hooker in Tobias Picker’s Emmeline.

“Something’s Coming” is from the first act of West Side Story. Tony, the male lead, sings it after his friend Riff convinces him to come to the neighborhood dance that night. Tony has become disillusioned with the Jets’ gang warfare and is looking for something better, and he believes that “something” is coming his way soon.
