An unscrupulous American naval officer marries a young Japanese geisha who believes that their love is eternal, leading to a heartbreaking betrayal and the ultimate sacrifice of a mother’s love.
Last presented by Tulsa Opera in 2012, Francesca Zambello’s production of Madama Butterfly returns to the stage with notable artists making their company debuts, including soprano Maria Natale as the geisha Cio-Cio San, tenor Matthew White as the naval officer Pinkerton, and mezzo-soprano Renée Rapier as Cio-Cio San’s faithful attendant Suzuki.
Baritone Aleksey Bogdanov, returning to Tulsa after his role as Nourabad in The Pearl Fishers, will sing Sharpless, and conductor James Lowe returns after conducting Puccini to Pop in 2017 and Turandot in 2018.
