The eighth video in our Staying Alive series features mezzo-soprano Jennifer Roderer singing the role of Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney Todd’s partner in crime.
In this song, Sweeney Todd has just returned to his old home above Mrs. Lovett’s meat pie shop, where she sells the “worst pies in London.” She tries to convince him to buy a pie, but even she admits that the pies are disgusting because she can’t afford good meat.
Roderer made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2017, singing the role of The Governess in Franco Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac. This May, she would have made her Tulsa Opera and role debut as Mrs. Bass in Tobias Picker’s Emmeline.
