Following a summer of change at Tulsa Opera and a few short weeks before we kick off an exciting 2018-19 opera season, we’d like to introduce some new roles for our staff. Ken McConnell, the company’s chief administrative officer and money manager, is now leading Tulsa Opera as interim executive director and CEO. McConnell took the reins in July following Greg Weber’s decision to step down as general director and CEO. Tobias Picker is Tulsa Opera’s Artistic Director. Picker is an award-winning composer whose operas and symphonic works have been commissioned and performed in opera houses around the world, and he has served as the Tulsa Opera’s Artistic Director since 2016.
Aaron Beck, known to many as the opera company’s Music & Education Administrator, is now the Artistic Administrator and Director of Education. Beck will continue to assist Artistic Director Picker while overseeing the orchestra and chorus. Meredith Miers joined the opera company in July as Associate Director of Development. A native of Tulsa and graduate of the University of Oklahoma, Miers served as Director of Development of Dillon International.
She has also worked previously with the Philbrook Museum of Art, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, and the Tulsa Historical Society & Museum. Karlye Whitt, a Young Artist for Tulsa Opera, joins the staff as Development Assistant. A featured soloist in last season’s The Stars Align 70th anniversary gala, Karlye joined the company as a Young Artist in January.
In May, Karlye makes her professional opera debut as Donna Anna in Tulsa Opera’s production of Don Giovanni. Michael Broyles, a longtime Oklahoma vocal music teacher hired in 2017 to teach the Raise Your Voice! program at several schools, joins Tulsa Opera as Program Director for Raise Your Voice! The after-school, vocal music program expands to nine schools for 2018-19.
