DON QUICHOTTE

About the Story...

Riez, allez riez du pauvre idéologue. Laugh, come laugh at this poor idealist! Everyone knows the wry, bittersweet story of the man of La Mancha, Don Quixote (Don Quichotte, as he is known in France): the beloved, befuddled knight-errant of impossible dreams.

Jules Massenet's heroic comedy – never before performed in Tulsa – has been a showcase for renowned bass singers since its first performance in 1910, when Feodor Chaliapin created the title role. In this Tulsa Opera premiere, our uniquely conceived, minimalist production will immerse you in Massenet's lovely, unforgettable music – with singing guaranteed to make you stand up and cheer.

About the Music...

“By the time he had reached the beginning of the last act, I was sobbing so hard that Massenet stopped playing, looked at me and exclaimed, ‘Chaliapin – please, please! Calme toi – Control yourself! Let me finish!’”

  – Feodor Chaliapin, recalling in his memoir the time Massenet first played and sang through the Don Quichotte score for him, in 1909

Excerpts from the music: Act IV entr'acte
